Was 296 g. Now is 266 g. Maintained 0.200 inch minimum thickness in top, 0.100 inch behind oil ring land and 0.095 inch in skirt window. Used 1/2 inch ball-end cutter and a rotary table. Less mass means less vibration and less rod stress. At 7000 rpm, the differential acceleration between BDC and TDC is about 1500 g's for this engine. Peak acceleration is about 3100 g's through TDC. So reducing the piston mass by 30 grams will decrease the tensile load on the rod by 0.030x3100 = 93 kilograms at 7000 rpm. The vibration forces will be reduced by 2x0.030x1500 = 90 kilograms at 7000 rpm. Adding the wrist pin, rings and 1/3 of the rod mass brings the total reciprocating mass to about 500 grams. So the remaining vibration forces are on the order of 2x0.500x1500 = 1500 kilograms at 7000 rpm!!! This engine still shakes the chassis enough to blur the center rear-view mirror (hard mounts).
